Amber – Women Reading 4: I’m working on a series of paintings titled “Women Reading.” Women in art have always been portrayed for their bodies. I want to change this and paint women’s minds. I put an ad on Craigslist asking women if I can take a photo of them reading, then paint from the photo. Many women responded. Amber, the subject of this painting was my fourth model.

Fat Girl: I’m working on a collection of paintings titled Fat Girls. The idea is to show big sized women enjoying their bodies and living their best life. I delibrately use the word “Fat” to describe the subjects of my paintings as the only way (in my opinion) to remove the shame from this word is to use it without shame. In the painting the woman is liberated from social expectations of what a woman’s body should look like, she is happy, she is free.

Look Closer 3 I’m working on a series of paintings of old doors titled “Look Closer” this project focuses on Domestic Violence at home, and Sexual Harassment at work. The viewer must come very close to the canvas bend down and peer through the keyhole in order to see the act of aggression carried out by a man against a woman. This adds an element of interaction between the viewer and the canvas, it also emphasizes the inaccessibility of these crimes which often go unreported by women due to fear of more violence. The old fashion doors portray how ancient this problem is.
