“God Given Right.” In my condemnation of gun ownership, I am angered and disgusted by gun enthusiasts claiming that guns are their “God Given Right.” Turning my anger and disgust into art, I created this painting I titled “God of Guns 1″

Window 1: I see value in discarded objects. I salvage old windows and turn them into works of art. The Arabic Calligraphy translates to: “Lean on yourself as if you’re the sturdiest thing you know.”

Window 7: This is a translation of a verse by the Arabic poet Al Mutanabbi, he is the equivalent of Shakespeare in the Arab world, in these lines he writes: “The wind blows in favor of our ship, we are the wind, we are the ship” I especially love this verse because it gives me back my power, it reminds me that I am in control of my life and my fate, I am not helpless, I am not a victim of random and uncontrollable circumstances.

Look Closer – In this painting I’m portraying Sexual Harassment at the workplace, which often happens behind doors. The abuse acted by a man against a woman is small and can only be viewed through the keyhole, this adds an interactive element between the painting and the viewer, but it also emphasizes the inaccessibility of these crimes which often go unreported by women due to the authoritative nature of the male boss carrying out the harassment. Women are also discouraged from reporting the harassment because they’re often blamed for the abuse, or are accused of seeking attention. The door and keyhole are very old in style to indicate that sexual harassment is a problem woman have suffered from for centuries.

Look Closer 2: In this painting I’m shedding the light on Domestic Violence, which often happens behind closed doors. The scene of violence carried out by a man against a woman is small and can only be seen through the keyhole, this adds an interactive element between the painting and the viewer, but it also emphasizes the inaccessibility of these crimes that often go unreported due to women’s fear of more violence from their partner if they reported the assault, the stigma, and the fear of being called liars and attention seekers also discourage women from speaking out..

Window 14: I paint Arabic Calligraphy on salvaged old windows. This piece is a favorite quote from Gibran Khalil Gibran “A woman’s heart does not alter with time or seasons. A woman’s heart fights, it never dies. A woman’s heart is like the wilderness which man turns into a battle field, uprooting its trees, burning its grass, smearing its rocks with blood, instilling bones and skulls into its earth, and yet it remains calm, still, and tranquil, and in it Spring remain Spring, and Autumn remains Autumn until the end of time.”

Look Closer 3 I’m working on a series of paintings of old doors titled “Look Closer” this project focuses on Domestic Violence at home, and Sexual Harassment at work. The viewer must come very close to the canvas bend down and peer through the keyhole in order to see the act of aggression carried out by a man against a woman. This adds an element of interaction between the viewer and the canvas, it also emphasizes the inaccessibility of these crimes which often go unreported by women due to fear of more violence. The old fashion doors portray how ancient this problem is.

Look Closer 4 – Door 4 of my collection “Look Closer” this project focuses on Domestic Violence at home, and Sexual Harassment at work. The viewer must come very close to the canvas bend down and peer through the small keyhole to see the act of aggression carried out by a man against a woman. This adds an element of interaction between the viewer and the canvas, it also emphasizes the inaccessibility of these crimes that often go unreported by women due to fear of facing more male violence. The old fashion doors portray the ancient nature of male aggression towards women, making the home and the workplace unsafe spaces for women.

Look Closer 5 – Door 5 of my collection “Look Closer” This collection sheds light on domestic violence, the viewer must come close to the canvas, bend down and peer into a small keyhole in order to see the image of a man violently abusing a woman. This adds an element of interaction between the viewer and the canvas. The small fragmented image of a man physically hurting a woman conveys the inaccessible nature of domestic abuse, as women victims rarely report it due to fear of facing more violence. The old fashioned door implies that the problem is a very old one.
